How it works
Three steps from application to scrubbing in (observationally).
Apply & pay the app fee. Submit your application with required documents. The $50 application fee starts the hospital coordination process.
We coordinate hospital access. Over ~2 weeks, we work with each hospital's credentialing team to confirm your observation rights.
Once approved, you get a confirmed list of surgeries with dates, times, and hospital locations.
Hospital approval is required, and it takes time.
Each hospital where you'll observe must individually approve your access. This takes about 2 weeks of coordination on our end (paperwork, credentialing, and scheduling). Once approved, we hand you a confirmed surgery schedule. Apply at least 4 weeks before you want to start.
What you'll observe
Neurosurgery: Spine procedures, brain surgery, and minimally invasive techniques.
Orthopedic surgery: Joint replacement, fracture repair, and sports medicine procedures.
Multiple OR settings: Rotate between several active hospitals across San Diego.
Surgical team dynamics: See how surgeons, anesthesia, and nursing teams coordinate.

Anyone curious about surgery. No prior medical background required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What if a hospital denies my access?
Each hospital approves observers individually, so a denial from one hospital doesn’t end your program. We build your schedule around the hospitals that approve your access.
Why is the application fee non-refundable?
The $50 fee covers about two weeks of hospital coordination: paperwork, credentialing, and scheduling. That work begins as soon as you apply, regardless of each hospital’s decision.
Can I choose specific surgeries to observe
You’ll observe neurosurgery and orthopedic procedures, but specific cases depend on each hospital’s operating schedule. Once approved, you’ll receive a confirmed list of surgeries with dates, times, and locations.
Will I get a letter of recommendation?
A letter of recommendation isn’t included. The program is strictly observational, so surgeons don’t evaluate participants’ performance.
What did our interns say?
A structured, hands-on clinical training experience in active San Diego medical practices, designed to prepare you for medical or PA school with real skills, real mentorship, and a clear path to a paid position.
